FORT WORTH, TX: Texas Wesleyan’s Leo Cubrilo has been named Red River Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the period of September 1-7. Cubrilo shared the award with Draion McNain of the University of Texas-Brownsville.
Cubrilo, a sophomore forward from Sarajevo, Bosnia, came off the bench to rally the Rams to a 4-3 double-overtime victory over NAIA #21 Benedictine College (KS). With Texas Wesleyan trailing 3-0, he entered the game and assisted on a goal to narrow the gap to two before halftime. Cubrilo then tied the game in the 54th minute and netted his third career game-winning goal in the 104th minute to cap the match. The Rams improved to 2-1-1 on the season.
McNain, a freshman forward from Savannah la Mar, Jamaica, provided half of the Scorpions’ scoring output in a 2-0 week, scoring two goals in the first 20 minutes of a 3-2 win over Oklahoma Baptist University. UTB holds a 3-1 record overall.
UTB’s Juan Gamboa was named RRAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Texas Wesleyan will return to the field on Saturday when they host Concordia University-Texas. The Lady Rams are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
