GOLD TAKES SERIES WITH 3-2 WIN
November 2, 2007

FORT WORTH, TX:  On a day of stellar defensive plays and more quality pitching the Gold team held on for a 3-2 series clinching win in game-four of the Wesleyan World Series.  The game was held to seven innings due to the possibility of having to play two.

Andrew Grace started the game for the Gold team and went three strong innings.  Grace allowed five hits in those three innings, but pitched out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the second and a two on two out jam in the third.  During the week Grace pitched in three games and went 5.2 innings allowing just two unearned runs.

In the bottom of the second inning the Navy team loaded the bases with a single by Nolan Whisenhunt (Jr.-TR) and back to back bunt singles by Colby Tomasi and Eric Alvarez (Fr.-RS).  However, Jerry Fisher came to the plate and laced a ball toward third baseman Zach Smith.  Smith scooped it just to his left and started a 5-2-3 double play.  Grace struck out the next batter to end the inning.

The Gold team pushed single runs across in the fourth and the seventh with quality base running.  Taylor Miller (So.-1L) stole second in the fourth and scored on a Ryan Hicks (Fr.-RS) single.  In the top of the seventh the Gold team again manufactured a run with a stolen base.  Cooper Dodd (Fr.-HS) stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.  That run would prove to be the difference in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh the Navy team made the game interesting by drawing two walks, one of which scored.  However, Matt Chutchian (So.-1L) got Colby Tomasi to pop out to Ben Kliever to end the game and the series.

The coaches voted Steven DeFratus (Sr.-Tr) as the Most Valuable Pitcher.  DeFratus won game-three by going eight innings allowing only four hits and striking out four.

The coaches voted Kyle Harmon (Jr.-Tr) as the Most Valuable Hitter.  Harmon was 3-8 with six walks, a triple, and two RBI.  He was also behind the plate for the Gold team in 31 of the 34 innings.

Honorable Mention:

Jesse Wright (Sr.-1L):  6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, ER, 6 Ks.

Matt Chutchian (So.-1L):  4.1 IP, 2 Saves

Blake Walker (Jr.-TR):  6-15, 2 BB, R
