HOUSTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (5-5-1) was narrowly defeated, 3-2, at the hands of NCAA Division I Houston Baptist University (7-2) on Wednesday.
The Rams trailed 1-0 at the half. In the 58th minute Theo Nabassi drew a foul that led to a penalty kick. Seth Mullins converted the penalty kick to tie the game at one. Houston Baptist regained the lead three minutes later and got an insurance goal in the 84th minute.
That third goal proved to be important as Leo Cubrillo scored off an assist from Adis Druzanovic 1:42 later.
Statistically, the game was very close. The Huskies led 15-13 in shots and 10-9 in shots on goal. Both teams recorded seven saves. The Huskies earned four corner kicks to the Rams two.
Joakim Soderbaum saw the majority of time in the net for the Rams. Soderbaum entered the contest in relief of Toby Rochau who was injured in the 13th minute. Texas Wesleyan has gotten outstanding play from both keepers this season. Entering this afternoon’s game Rochau held a goals against average of 1.39 while Soderbaum stood at 1.46.
“We had a shot, but just didn’t quite have it today,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We need to play better, and that starts tomorrow.”
The Rams host Our Lady of the Lake University on Thursday in their final non-conference tune-up of the season. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at Martin Field.
