FORT WORTH, TX: The UT-Brownsville men’s soccer team (8-2-1) remained unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play at 5-0 with a 1-0 win over Texas Wesleyan University (5-4-1, 1-1) on Saturday.
The game was decided on a foul outside the top of the box in the 30th minute. UTB’s Mark McCormick ripped the ensuing free kick into the top left corner of the net.
Defense prevailed on both sides throughout the contest. Early in the second half, the Scorpions had a shot at an empty net after a rebound only to see Ekene Onuoha make a spectacular bicycling stop.
The Scorpions took 15 shots, while the Rams managed 11, including eight in the second half. Goalkeeper Toby Rochau made three saves in the loss.
“UT-Brownsville is a terrific team,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We had a shot at them, but you can’t win if you can’t finish. We just weren’t dangerous today.”
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, October 3, when they travel to Houston, TX, to take on NCAA Division I Houston Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start and will be preceded by a women’s game.
