DUNCAN, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team has made it two in a row to start the season. The Rams pulled away in the final round to win by 14 strokes. Mitch Hendon and Paco Saracho continued their dominance, placing first and second for the third consecutive tournament.
The win marked the 184th win in program history and the 13th in the tenure of head coach Kevin Millikan. The Rams entered the day clinging to a one-shot lead; however, their final score of 572 was good enough to top Abilene Christian University by 14 strokes.
Hendon sat in third place after a first round of 70. His final round 69 gave him a total of 139 and his second consecutive win. Saracho jumped from seventh to second with a second round of 69, finishing at 141 for the tournament. Hendon and Saracho’s accomplishment is remarkable in that they finished first and second in last week’s Charles Coody Intercollegiate, and, two weeks ago, Saracho won the Fort Worth City Championship while Hendon took home second. For the second consecutive tournament St. Edward’s University’s Jeff Howard placed third.
Armando Villareal and Johnathon Dickerson both shot 73 in the final round to finish with scores of 148 and 152 respectively. Kevin Doskocil finished with an overall score of 146 after carding a 75 in Tuesday’s final round.
On Monday, September 24, the Rams will host the O.D. Bounds Golf Classic, a non-collegiate event that benefits the O.D. Bounds Endowment, which supports the golf program at Texas Wesleyan.
The Rams will return to competition on October 1-2, when they travel to Phoenix, AZ, to compete in the Grand Canyon Invitational at Estrella Mountain Ranch.
