FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (0-4-0) at Martin Field on Saturday.
The teams traded early penalty kicks. A foul on Texas Wesleyan’s goalkeeper, Joakim Soderbaum, led to a penalty kick for UMHB’s Mickey Kerr who put the Cru on top 1-0 in the games third minute. Seth Mullins converted a penalty kick to tie the game in the 13th minute.
In the 24th minute, Theo Nabassi headed a crossing pass to Eken Onuoha who headed the ball into the net for the go-ahead score.
The remainder of the game was marked by strong defense from both sides. The two team’s combined for just seven shots on goal. Soderbauma and his UMHB counterpart, Mark Miller, each made two saves in goal.
“This was a great game,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “It was all out from both sides for ninety minutes. It was good to win a well-played game. We just keep getting better every day.”
The Rams will return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Canyon, TX, to take on West Texas A&M University. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start and will be followed by a women’s game.
