OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (4-5) split a pair of matches against Sooner Athletic Conference opponents on Tuesday. The Rams just missed closing out Oklahoma City University (8-1) in three games before falling in five (30-22, 30-24, 31-33, 25-30, 13-15). They then took the floor against Mid-America Christian University (1-3) and took a 3-0 win (30-26, 30-23, 32-30).
The Oklahoma City match lived up to the billing of a battle between Region VI’s second ranked Stars and third ranked Rams. The match marked a third consecutive five-game contest for Christy Clawson’s Lady Rams. Having won the previous two matches, they fell to 2-1 on the year in matches going the distance.
The Rams led the match 2-0 and just missed shutting the Stars out when Oklahoma City took game-three 33-31. The Final two games were just as close as OCU took game four 30-25 and game-five 15-13. Texas Wesleyan trailed 5-1 early in the final set, but rallied to within a point at 14-13 before OCU put the match away with a final kill.
Sandra Ayala turned in a match-high 20 kills while Brittney Person added 16 for the Rams. Evoni Darling finished with 49 assists and 17 digs. Erin Miller led the team with 20 digs. Liz Meng had a solid match as well with 12 kills, 14 digs, and five blocks.
Mid-America Christian made the Rams work in each game, but Texas Wesleyan was able to take the match in straight sets.
Miller led the way with 13 kills. Ayala added 12 kills and 15 digs. Ashley Mock posted 26 digs while Darling finished with 35 assists.
The Rams return to action this weekend with strong competition in the Sid Richardson Center. On Friday, September 7, they host long time rival Houston Baptist University at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday they will host Region VI’s top ranked squad, RRAC rival UT-Brownsville at 4:00 p.m.
