RAMS TAKE REGULAR SEASON TITLE:

WALDROP GETS RECORD
March 3, 2007

Box Score

HAWKINS, TX:  With a 63-59 win over Jarvis Christian College (17-10, 8-8 RRAC) in the final game of the regular season, the Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team (19-10, 12-4) wrapped up the regular season Red River Athletic Conference championship.  The win was also the 161st in head coach Terry Waldrop’s career, making him the school’s all-time winningest coach.

The Rams controlled the tempo in the first half with outstanding defense.  Texas Wesleyan held Jarvis to 23% shooting from the floor while hitting at a 41% clip at their end.

Texas Wesleyan held the Bulldogs to a meager 16 points in the first half and led 28-16 at the break.

In the second half, the Rams continued to control the game until an 11-1 Jarvis run made it a one possession game at 47-44 with just over six minutes to play.

The game was tight down the stretch.  Jarvis tied the contest at 59 in the final minute, but two free throws from Aaron Scott put the Rams back on top.  The Texas Wesleyan defense buckled down and did not allow Jarvis to score from that point.

Aaron Scott led the Rams with 19 points.  DaLane Finley turned in a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Fred Eshon added 10 points for the Rams.

With the win, the 17th ranked Rams won the RRAC regular season title and will be the #1 seed in this week’s RRAC Tournament.  They will meet 8th seeded Bacone College in first round action on Thursday.  That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, TX.

Terry Waldrop surpassed Elmer Hannebutt’s (1956-69) school record for wins.  Waldrop’s career record now stands at 161-110.
