LADY RAMS TAKE EASY WIN OVER STEERS

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (15-8, 7-4 RRAC) cruised to an easy victory over conference opponent Texas College (1-14, 1-9) 69-47 on Saturday.

Despite the Lady Rams jumping out to an early lead, the Lady Steers played tough. A jumper by Texas College’s Patrice Benson gave the Lady Steers a 26-25 lead with 1:14 remaining. Besse Cuington added to the lead with a 3 pointer with 39 seconds left and gave the Lady Steers a four point 29-26 lead going into the break.

The Lady Rams shot only 25.7% in the first half of play. The play of Moneke Smallwood kept The Lady Rams in the game. Smallwood had 12 points and three steals in 17 minutes of first half play. Tara Hurd also made an impact with seven points, seven rebounds.

At the start of the second half, the Lady Rams rattled off a 15-1 run and took a 41-30 lead with 11:20 remaining.

Solid performances from three Lady Rams helped seal the win against the Lady Steers. Smallwood finished with 12 points, three steals, and three assists. Brittany Turner had 13 points and five rebounds in the contest. Hurd finished her breakout game with a double double, scoring 12 points and collecting 10 boards.

The Lady Rams’ next game will be against SAGU on February 16 at the Sid Richardson Center. Game time set for 5:30 p.m.
