RAMS TAKE RRAC OVER STEERS
February 9, 2007

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The 22nd ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (16-8, 9-2 RRAC) nearly led wire-to-wire in a Red River Athletic Conference contest against Texas College (14-10, 8-3).  The Rams topped the Steers 75-64.

As a part of “Think Pink Week” Texas Wesleyan staff and numerous fans wore pink t-shirts to the game in support of breast cancer research.  The Rams draped their bench with shirts inscribed with the names of everyone in their lives who has been touched by cancer.

The Rams started the game on a 10-0 run that lasted nearly six minutes.  Texas College chipped away and took a 17-16 lead on a three-pointer from Czyz Bennett.  The Rams regained the lead and never trailed again after a three from Kennith Gober brought the score to 23-20.

Texas Wesleyan’s stifling zone defense held the Steers to 24% shooting in the first half, and the Rams led 36-30 at the break.

The Rams took a double-figure advantage six minutes into the second half at 48-38.  The lead swelled to 14 points at 54-50 after a trey from Gober with just over 12 minutes to play.  The margin remained 14 at 71-57 with 1:34 on the clock, when Texas College scored five unanswered points to cut the margin to a manageable 71-62 with 1:19 to play.

In the final minute, the Rams knocked down four-of-six from the free throw line and held on for the 75-64 win.

Texas Wesleyan held the steers to 30% shooting in the game and won the battle-of-the-boards 53-49.

Gober finished with a game-high 24 points.  Dalane Finley added 13 points for the Rams, and Dane Dmitrovic continued to fill the stat sheet with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists.

Bennett poured in 21 points for Texas College, while Trey Manning added 14 of his own.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Bacone College.  That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Sid Richardson Center.
