RICHARDSON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (2-7) suffered a heartbreaking 50-48 loss in the final seconds at UT-Dallas (3-4) on Wednesday.
In the first half, the Lady Rams forced 11 turnovers from the Comets. DeLisa Williams gave the Rams their first lead at 10-9 when she scored on a tip-in midway through the first half. From there, Texas Wesleyan controlled the game, leading by as many as five, 14-9. However, UTD closed the period on a 6-2 run to send the game to halftime tied at 20.
In the second half, the Lady Rams took control from the start. Kim Gatlin capped a 6-0 run with a three-pointer that brought the score to 26-20 in the first minute of the second period. Midway through the half, a Jennifer Peoples’ bucket stretched the lead to nine at 37-28.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the game, Chelsea Edwards cut the Rams’ lead to three at 38-35. However, on the next Texas Wesleyan possession, Nastassia Brown converted a three-point play to give the Rams a more comfortable 41-35 edge.
With three minutes to go, back-to-back Texas Wesleyan turnovers led to a layup from Jenna Harris and a three from Leslie Leatherwood that gave UTD their first lead, 46-45, since the scoreboard showed 9-8 early in the first half.
Pilar Pinkus answered with two points to put the Rams on top 47-46, but a pair of free throws form Harris swung the game back to UTD 48-47 with 1:46 on the clock. Pinkus then tied the game with one-of-two from the line with 1:19 to play, and the game remained deadlocked at 48 until Ericka Baker hit one-of-two free throws to put the Comets ahead 49-48 with 15 seconds on the clock. In the final seconds, Edwards hit one more free throw to account for the 50-48 final.
The Lady Rams were able to control most of the game because they controlled the boards, taking a 45-40 rebounding margin. The two team’s combined for 47 turnovers in the game; however, UTD capitalized for 22 points off of 23 turnovers while Texas Wesleyan managed just 11 points off of 24 UTD miscues.
Brown led the Rams with nine points and seven rebounds while Pinkus added seven points and seven boards. UTD’s Chelsea Edwards led all scorers with 16 points. |
