CEDAR HILL, TX: The third seeded Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (6-7-2) took a 4-1 win over the sixth seed Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-13-2) in quarterfinal action at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Monday.
Although, Texas Wesleyan held the Lions to just two shots in the first half, SAGU went to the break with a 1-0 lead. In the second half, the Rams had a strong wind at their back and were able to dominate play.
Two minutes into the second period, Jason Reid tied the game on an assist from Chase Richeson. Six minutes later, Ben Smith scored the eventual game-winner on a break away.
In the 74th minute, Richeson converted a penalty kick to bring the score to 3-1, and in the 86th minute Richeson got involved yet again when he played a ball ahead to Smith who finished the game’s final goal.
Texas Wesleyan out shot SAGU 28-7 in the contest. Thomas Hansen made one save in goal for the Rams against just two shots on goal allowed.
“We didn’t have our best game today,” said head coach Josh Gibbs, “but we still found away to win. That’s the mark of a good team.”
The defending RRAC Champion Rams will continue to tomorrow’s semifinal match where they will meet second seeded Huston-Tillotson University (11-3-1) at 2:00 p.m. H-TU defeated Texas Wesleyan in a 2-1 nail-biter at Martin Field in their only meeting this season.
