FORT WORTH, TX: The defending NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Champion, Texas Wesleyan University, was picked in a dead heat for the top spot in the Red River Athletic Conference’s preseason coaches’ poll. Although the Rams received more first place votes, they were picked in a tie with Houston Baptist at 92 points each.
Teams are still waiting for the release of the official NAIA national preseason poll; however, the Rams have already been selected 5th nationally by Street & Smith Sports Annuals.
In the RRAC coaches’ poll, head coaches ranked teams from 1-10 with 10 points for the team picked to finish first, nine points for the team picked second, etc. Texas Wesleyan and Houston Baptist, last season’s RRAC Champion, each received 92 points. However, the Rams received five first place votes, while Houston Baptist received four.
Langston University followed the Rams and Huskies at 79 points. Wiley College was picked fourth at 64 points including a first place vote, and Jarvis Christian rounded out the top five.
The Rams will open their season with an exhibition game at UT-Arlington on Thursday November 2, at 7:00 p.m. Their first official game will be at the Sid Richarson center on Satuday, November 4, when they host Dallas Christian College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 tip-off.
