FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team (3-4, 1-1 RRAC) made a triumphant return to Martin Field on Saturday. The Lady Rams took a 2-1 win over Northwood (1-9, 0-1 RRAC) in their home opener, giving them a 4-3 edge in the all-time series between the two schools.
After opening the season with a six-game stretch on the road, the Lady Rams were glad to be back at the friendly confines of Martin Field. Heather Fowler got things started early when she scored off an assist from Loren Clark just 2:03 into the game.
Although the Rams out shot the Knights 30-16, there was no more scoring until late in the second half. In the 82nd minute, Brianna McKernon delivered the two-goal cushion that Texas Wesleyan was looking for, but just one minute later Valerie Mendoza found the net for Northwood to bring the score to 2-1. In the final minutes, the Lady Rams hit two crossbars and the game ended at 2-1.
Head coach Josh Gibbs was very pleased with his team’s performance. “From start to finish we played really well today. We were the better team out there, and our girls did a good job of keeping their heads in a rivalry game.”
Texas Wesleyan will hit the road again for four more games. They return to action on Monday, October 2, when they travel to Oklahoma City University. The game, rescheduled from earlier this season, is set for a 5:00 p.m. start and will be followed by a men’s game. |
