DENTON, TX: The defending Red River Athletic Conference Champion Texas Wesleyan women’s soccer team finally got its season underway on Saturday. After weather postponed last weekend’s contest, the Lady Rams traveled to Denton to take on Texas Woman’s University. Unfortunately the Pioneers came away with a 1-0 win on a late goal by Emily Meinin.
The Rams, who had not been shutout in 12 consecutive games, were a bit more selective than the Pioneers on offense. Texas Woman’s led 19-5 on shots, but that margin dwindled to 9-4 on shots on goal.
Brittany O’Brien, a sophomore transfer from Drury University, kept Texas Wesleyan’s hopes alive as she turned in eight saves in 90 minutes between the pipes. It appeared that O’Brien and her counterpart, Aly Vincent, who had four saves for the Pioneers, would both escape the game unscathed. However, Texas Wesleyan was called for a foul in the 86th minute, and Meinin converted the game-winner on the ensuing free kick from 25 yards out.
Melody Overland, Sarah Wilson, Nicole Richardson, and Loren Clark each delivered a shot on goal, but Vincent was up to the task each time.
Texas Woman’s improved to 2-2 on the season with the win. Texas Wesleyan (0-1) will have to put the loss behind them as they jump back into action immediately. The Rams will take on West Texas A&M University (4-0) in Denton, TX, on Sunday. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. |
