DOSKOCIL FINISHES 2nd AT WEST TEXAS AMATEUR
July 25, 2006

LUBBOCK, TX:  Texas Wesleyan University’s Kevin Doskocil shot nineteen under par to place second at the West Texas Amateur held at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, TX, July 21-23.  Doskocil entered the final round trailing the leader by just one stroke.  In that final round he match the standing course record of 64 only to see Tom Doughtie shoot a round of 63 to win his third West Texas title.

After shooting 68 and 67 in the first two rounds, Doskocil, a sophomore at Texas Wesleyan, found himself in position to win entering the final round.  He began that round with three consecutive birdies and shot four-under to match Doeghtie’s 32 on the front nine.

The two fired eight birdies and an eagle between them on the back nine.  Trailing by two strokes on a demanding 499-yard fourteenth hole, Doskocil holed his second shot from 199 yards out for an eagle that moved him into a tie for the lead.  However, Doughtie answered with birdies on three of the last four holes to claim the championship with an overall card of 197 (-19) while Doskocil finished at 199 (-17).

Doskocil saw his performance as a confidence booster for the upcoming collegiate season.  “This was a pretty competitive tournament with several schools much larger than Wesleyan represented,” Doskocil commented.  “I got in a groove, started playing well, and tried to win the thing.”

Doskocil posted four top-ten finishes and two top-ten’s last season at Texas Wesleyan while the team won the Red River Athletic Conference championship and finished eighth in the NAIA National tournament.  “I’m really excited about the guys we have coming back and the guys that are coming in,” he said, “and I look forward to contending for a national championship this year.”

Doskocil is not the only Ram who has played well this summer. Senior Justin Smith won the Southern Amateur qualifying and missed qualifying for the Texas State Open by just one shot.

Texas Wesleyan has finished in the top-ten at the NAIA National tournament in each of the last three seasons.  In 52 years of membership, the Rams have made 45 appearances in the NAIA National tournament winning six titles, and finishing outside of the top ten on only two occasions.
