FORT WORTH, TX: The 22nd ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (15-3) wrapped up a four-game series with UT-Brownsville (8-12-1) on Saturday. The Rams split today’s doubleheader to take three-of-four from the scorpions.
Texas Wesleyan won game one 5-2, but a 7-5 loss in game two snapped a nine-game winning streak overall and a 20-game winning streak at home that dated back to April 11th of last year.
In game one, the Rams got an RBI double from Josh Vander Hey and a sacrifice fly from Taylor Miller to go up 2-0 in the first inning. The Rams took advantage of a Scorpion miscue to plate two more in the third.
Jason Diaz led off the fifth with a single. He then stole second and later stole home on a double-steal to give the Rams a 5-0 advantage. UTB got RBI singles from Chris Walker and Jacob Yousif to score their two runs in the sixth.
Ryan Riddle (2-0) earned the win with six innings pitched. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five. Jesse Wright earned his first save of the season with a perfect seventh inning.
Ryan Jacobi led the Rams at the plate in game one by going 2-for-3. Billie Hick scored a pair of runs for Texas Wesleyan.
In game two, the Scorpions got an unearned run in the second, but a solo-homer to center from Taylor Miller tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
Hicks and Vander He led off the third with back-to-back walks and later scored to put Texas Wesleyan on top 3-1. UT-Brownsville got an RBI double from Gilbert Gonzalez in the fourth, but Jayson Rachuig was in cruise control on the mound for the Rams until the sixth.
In the sixth, the Scorpions sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs on five hits including three consecutive doubles from Yousif, Gonzalez, and Houston Rodriguez.
The Rams rallied in the bottom of the seventh. The Rams loaded the bases with one out, and Vander Hey delivered a two-run single. However, David Belleperche enduced a game-ending double-play ball.
Belleperche got the win after working five innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two. Rachuig (1-2) got the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out four in 5.1 innings of work.
Jacobi wrapped up a solid day at the plate by going 2-for-4 at the plate. Vander Hey and Miller each knocked in a pair of runs.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host UT-Tyler. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at LaGrave Field. |
