RAMS STING SCORPIONS
March 9, 2007

Box Score - Game One

Box Score - Game Two

FORT WORTH, TX:  The 22nd ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (14-2) swept a doubleheader from UT-Brownsville (7-11-1) at LaGrave Field on Friday.  The Rams came from behind in both games, winning 5-3 and 6-7.

Hayden Lackey locked down the save in both contests.  Already the school’s career record holder with 13 saves, Lackey tied the single-season record with his fifth and sixth saves, and it’s still early in March.

In game one, the Scorpions turned a Texas Wesleyan error and a Jacob Yousif single into two runs in the first inning.

Josh Vander Hey cracked a monster home run in the bottom of the inning.  Ross Elmore and Jason Diaz led off the third with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at two.  Chris Palmer gave the Rams the lead when his two-out single plated Diaz with the go-ahead run.

A Taylor Miller homer in the fourth put the Rams on top 4-2.  UTB got an unearned run in the fifth, but the Rams got that run back in the sixth.

Weston Wood (2-0) got the win after working five innings and allowing three unearned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four.  Lackey picked up the save with a perfect seventh inning.

In game two, Jason Diaz gave the Rams a 1-0 lead in the first when he led off with a single and later scored on a sac fly from Josh Vander Hey, but Gilbert Gonzalez put the Scorpions on top with a two-run homer in the second.

An RBI triple off the bat of Ryan Jacobi tied the game at two in the bottom of the second, but and RBI double from Chris Walker and a two-run single from Yousif gave the Scorpions a 5-2 lead in the third.

The Rams began to chip away with an unearned run in the bottom of the third, but a sac fly from Andres Monterrubio brought the score to 6-3 in the fourth.

Still trailing by three in the sixth, Texas Wesleyan got RBI from Jacobi and Diaz.  Diaz later scored on a UTB error to tie the game at six.

Ross Elmore led off the bottom of the eighth with his fifth hit and second double of the day.  A bunt single from Jacobi advanced Elmore to third and Jason Diaz knocked in the go-ahead run with a fly to left.

The Scorpions got a one-out double from Gonzales in the ninth, but Hayden Lackey struck out the final two batters to earn his record tying sixth save of the season.

Aaron Wimpee (1-0) got the win after striking out three in three hitless innings.

Elmore went 4-4 with three runs scored in game two.  Jacobi added two hits and two RBI.

The Rams and Scorpions will finish their four-game series with a doubleheader at LaGrave Field on Saturday.  Game one is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
