FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (12-2) survived a late rally from UT-Dallas (9-4) to take a 6-5 win at LaGrave Field on Tuesday.
The Comets touched Caleb Thomas for a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first. The Rams plated one in the bottom of the inning, but left the bases loaded.
Antoine Cole cracked his first homer of the season to tie the game at two in the third. In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams turned a UTD error into a run to snag a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Texas Wesleyan got back-to-back RBI doubles from Brandon Frazier and Josh Vander Hey and plated three runs to take a more comfortable 6-2 advantage.
That score held up until the eighth. In that inning, the Rams needed four pitchers to record three outs. The Comets pushed an unearned run across the plate before Hayden Lackey came on to record the final out.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Comets recorded the first hits off of Lackey since the season opener and the first earned runs of the season off the right-hander. Lackey had worked 6.2 perfect hitless innings over eight appearances. The Comets led off with consecutive singles that eventually came around to score, but Lackey closed the door to earn his fourth save of the season.
Caleb Thomas (5-0) got the win after working five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two.
Jeff Henkleman was tagged with the loss after allowing an unearned run on one hit and two walks in two innings of work.
Vander Hey led the Rams at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Cole went 2-for-2 with a home run.
The Rams return to action with a four-game series with UT-Brownsville this weekend. Game one of Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch. |
