FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (7-2) used a two-out rally in the fifth inning to defeat Wayland Baptist (5-4) by a score of 4-3 at LaGrave Field on Sunday.
Texas Wesleyan’s Caleb Thomas and Wayland Baptist’s Mario Canales Jr. were dueling early. Both pitchers put up zeros through the first four innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Antoine Cole stole home, but Chris Palmer struck out on the play and was thrown out at first, negating the run.
In the top of the fifth, the Pioneers struck with a three-run homer from Matt Knobbe.
Canales got two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Victor Burgos singled to right center. Jason Diaz then walked and a single from Brandon Frazier loaded the bases. Josh Vander Hey and Taylor Miller then produced back-to-back two-run singles to give the Rams the lead.
Aaron Wimpee provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and Hayden Lackey nailed down his second save of the season by recording the final two outs.
Thomas (4-0) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings of work.
Vander Hey went 3-for-3 with two RBI on the Day. Miller added two hits and two RBI for the Rams.
Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Monday. Game one is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. |
