FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (4-4) took a 64-59 win over Wayland Baptist University (4-5) in the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday.
The Flying Queens held Texas Wesleyan to 39% shooting from the field in the first half and led 31-27 at the break after leading by as many as eight.
Texas Wesleyan still trailed 35-31 early in the second half, but a pair of free throws from Pilar Pinkus cut the deficit to two points. After a defensive stop, Stephanie Reder hit a three to give the Lady Rams their first lead at 36-35. That sparked a 15-4 run putting the Rams ahead 48-39 with just under ten minutes to play.

Consecutive three point plays from WBU’s Anastasia Okolo put the Flying Queens right back in the game at 48-45. After a put-back by Miki Mays, WBU trailed 60-57 with 1:42 to play. With 14 seconds on the clock, Tiffany Hill hit one-of-two from the free throw line to give the Rams a four-point lead. A pair of free throws from Okolo then gave the Flying Queens life at 61-59 with seven second remaining. Texas Wesleyan hit three-of-four free throws in the final seven seconds to ice the 64-59 win.
Wayland Baptist out rebounded the Lady Rams 46-25, but Texas Wesleyan capitalized on 31 Flying Queen turnovers.
Melissa Myers led the Rams with 17 points while Stephanie Reder and Britney Helton added 14 and 12 respectively. WBU’s Anastasia Okolo finished with 17, points while Vanita Wright brought down 16 rebounds.
The Lady Rams break for the holidays and return to action on Thursday, December 29, when they host Oklahoma Baptist University. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
