AUSTIN, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (9-6-1, 7-2 RRAC) traveled to Austin, TX, on Saturday for their regular season finale. The Rams took a 3-1 win over Huston Tillotson (1-10-1, 1-6-1).
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Texas Wesleyan jumped ahead in the second half on goals from Seth Mullins and Alfonso Govea. HTU responded with a goal from Carlos Castillo, but Thomas Hansen, the Rams regular keeper, put the game away when he converted a penalty kick for the 3-1 final.
With a 7-2 record in Red River Athletic Conference play, the Rams finished in a tie at the top of the standings. However, UT-Permian Basin wins the tiebreaker and Texas Wesleyan will be the 2nd seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
With that #2 seed, the Rams get a bye through the quarterfinals, which will be held on Thursday on the campus of Texas A&M International University. “We were a little short-handed today, but we should be at full strength for the weekend,” said Head Coach Steve Jones. “It is a wide open tournament. The good thing is that we have a couple of days to train, and we get to watch on Thursday. The team that makes the fewest mistakes is going to win this tournament.”
The Rams will play in the RRAC semifinals on Friday in Laredo, TX, with a shot at the conference championship game on Saturday on the line. |
