FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (6-5-1) and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers (7-3-1) played to a 3-3 draw on Saturday.
The Drovers outshot the Rams 33-21, but Texas Wesleyan matched USAO goal for goal. Tom Hubbard got the scoring started for USAO when Adam Day’s free kick found him open for a score. Just two minutes later, the Rams tied the game when Ricky Gallardo hit Jose Melendez for a goal. With 20:50 remaining in the first half, Raphael Silvo put the Drovers back on top. Again, the Rams had an answer, and John Kuethe found Christian Villasenor for a goal two minutes later. With 5:40 on the clock Day converted a penalty kick to send USAO to the half with a 3-2 lead.
Defense would begin to prevail after a first half shootout. With 39:19 to play in regulation, Jason Reid drew a foul in the box, and Seth Mullins scored on the penalty kick to knot the game at three. Both teams would have chances, but neither defense would budge through two overtime periods, and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
Head Coach Steve Jones was pleased with his team’s performance. “We gave up too much in the first half, and traded goals with them. You cannot do that against a good team like this, but we fought back and earned a good result.”
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host College of the Southwest. The Rams trail CSW by just a half game in the RRAC standings. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a women’s game. |
