STREAK IS BROKEN
October 12, 2005

CEDAR HILL, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team made the short trip to Cedar Hill today to take on rival Northwood University in a battle of Red River Athletic Conference unbeatens.  Unfortunately the Lady Rams came out on the short end of a 3-2 score.

The game marked the first conference loss of the season and snapped a school record five-game winning streak for the Lady Rams, who entered the contest ranked 2nd in NAIA Region VI (up from last week’s #4 ranking).

The Knights opened the scoring in a hurry when Debora Valeri, who leads the RRAC in points per game and goals per game, scored on a free kick just two minutes into the contest.  Jessica Carrion knotted the game at one when she scored off an assist from Loren Clarkwith 28:00 remaining in the half.  The game appeared to be destined for a 1-1 tie at halftime, but Danica Brown found the net with 7:00 remaining to give Northwood a 2-1 edge at the break.

In the second half, Clark tied the game with an assist from Brianna McKernon with 27:00 minutes remaining.  Again it appeared that the game would remain deadlocked, but Emily Mathews netted the game winner in the 88th minute.

The Lady Rams controlled the ball for much of the game and outshot the Knights 20-6; however, 3 of the Knights 4 shots on goal found their mark.

Head Coach Steve Jones was disappointed with the loss, “We dominated this game, but our own mistakes killed us.”

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the RRAC.  Meanwhile Northwood improved to 6-4 and 3-0.

Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.  That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Martin Field and will be followed by a men’s game.
