ODESSA, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball (25-19, 7-5 RRAC) team entered this weekend’s series with UT-Permian Basin (15-23-1, 6-9) trailing the Falcons for third place in the Red River Athletic Conference North Division standings. With only the top three teams advancing to the conference tournament, the Rams desperately needed a strong performance in Odessa. They responded by completing a three-game sweep with wins of 14-7 and 13-2 on Saturday.
Saturday’s wins moves Texas Wesleyan into a tie for second with College of the Southwest who entered the day with a 7-5 record and a scheduled triple-header with Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
In game one, the Falcons used a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Texas Wesleyan answered emphatically with nine runs in the top of the sixth and cruised to the 14-7 win.
Weston Wood improved to 6-2 on the year with the win for Texas Wesleyan.
In game two, the Rams had to rally again. UTPB scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead, but the Rams responded immediately. Texas Wesleyan scored four in the fourth and seven in the fifth to take command at 11-2.
Jason Hopson worked five strong innings and improved to 5-4 on the season.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Paul Quinn at LaGrave Field for the final regular season home game. That contest along with a doubleheader at Paul Quinn on Thursday mark the final conference games of the year for the Rams. Wednesday’s senior day game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
