RAMS SPLIT WITH MUSTANGS
March 31, 2006

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University (14-10, 1-1 RRAC) baseball team split a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader with College of the Southwest (12-18, 1-4) on Friday.  The Mustangs took game one 7-2, but the Rams rebounded to win game two 8-3.

In game one, the Mustangs used a leadoff walk and three singles to score a run in their half of the first inning.  Travis Clifford tied the game at one with a solo-homer in the second.

An unearned run in the fourth gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.  In the bottom of the fifth, a CSW miscue and singles from Cory Venable and Brandon Frazier tied the game at two.

In the sixth, a two-run double from Felipe Foster and an RBI single Bobby Briceno gave CSW a 5-2 lead, and the Mustangs added two more in the seventh for the 7-2 final.

Derek Hill tossed a complete game for the win, allowing two runs on seven hits.  Shea Harrison (3-2) suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks in 6.2 innings of work.

Game two was a back-and-fort affair.  The Rams took the lead when Jeff Piaksowski singled home Brandon Frazier in the third.  The Mustangs tied the game in the fourth with an RBI-single from Captain Scott.

The Rams took a 3-1 edge in the bottom of the fourth with a double from Josh Vander Hey and singles from Cory Venable and Zach Archer.  Again the Mustangs tied the game with a two-run homer from Jason Marin in the sixth.  In the bottom of the sixth, Zach Archer’s double scored Jason Diaz from first to give the Rams a 4-3 advantage.

The floodgates finally opened in the eighth inning.  Texas Wesleyan scored four runs on four hits including a towering home run from Jeff Piaskowski to put the game away at 8-3.

Weston Wood (3-2) earned the win by scattering six hits across six innings and allowing just three runs while striking out nine.  Michael Talley earned the save with three scoreless innings.

The top five hitters in the Texas Wesleyan order each recorded multiple hits.  Jason Diaz and Billie Hicks each went 3-5 while Piaskowski was 2-5 with 3 RBI.

The Rams and Mustangs will complete their three game series on Saturday.  The first pitch for that game has been moved back to 1:30 p.m.
