Rams crush Texas College, 14-3

     CEDAR HILL, Texas -
Texas Wesleyan pounded out 20 hits en route to a 14-3 victory over Texas College in an elimination-round game at the Red River Conference Tournament on Thursday morning.

     Texas Wesleyan (26-27) got on the board in the first inning when catcher Jason Diaz led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by third baseman Derek Armstrong to put the Rams ahead 1-0.

     Right fielder Jarod Baker put the Rams up, 2-0 with home run in the fourth inning to left centerfield.

     Texas College (16-19) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, when left fielder Daniel Treat hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Randall Odums and cut the Ram lead to, 2-1.

     In the sixth inning, the Rams broke the game open, scoring seven runs on seven hits. Second baseman Anthony Bolivar led Texas Wesleyan with a double, single, a run scored and two RBI in the inning.

     The Steers fought back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Texas Wesleyan pushed five across in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

     Senior Brad Shiller (1-3) picked up the victory for the Rams, allowing just one hit, while walking two and striking out five batters in 2.2 innings of work. Shiller retired the first seven batters he faced and struck out the first four of the game, before running into trouble with two outs in the third inning.

     Bolivar and Diaz led the hitting attack by both going 4-for-5 at the plate. Diaz upped his team-leading average to .413, while Bolivar delivered one run scored and three RBI. Armstrong went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.

     Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Friday in an elimination game at 12:30 p.m. Its opponent is yet to be determined. The game will be held at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas. With a victory, the Rams will play another game at 3:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
