ARLINGTON,
Texas - Sophomore Reino Deetlefs fired a final-round 69 (three-under par)
to finish first in the Texas Intercollegiate, Tuesday afternoon at the Tierra
Verde Golf Course. The Texas
Wesleyan varsity finished second, while the junior varsity finished eighth out
of 16 teams.
Deetlefs (67-69=136 (eight-under
par)), at one point in his final round, was as low as six-under par, but finished
with his second consecutive individual title in as many weeks. The Ransburg, South
Africa native, also took home first-place honors last week at the Jet Classic
in Wichita, Kan. This is the first time that a Ram golfer has one back-to-back
tournaments under Millikan's command.
"Reino
had another solid performance this week," head coach Kevin Millikan said.
"I am really proud of what he has accomplished and impressed with the way
he has been able to put together such a run."
Also
finishing in the top-10 was freshman Dan Hahn. The Denver, Colo. native, fired
a closing-round one-over par 73, to follow up his even-par 72 from Monday. He
finish tied for 10th.
"Dan has really
blossomed this spring," Millikan said. "He has been a real asset to
this team. He is only shooting one-over par in his last 72 holes."
Also
competing for Texas Wesleyan were junior Justin Ward (75-76=151) who finished
tied for 26th, freshman Scott Sikes (74-79=153) who finished tied for 35th and
senior Ryan Craig (78-76=154) who tied for 40th.
Texas
Wesleyan (288-294=582) finished seven shots behind tournament-champion Oklahoma
Christian
(286-289=575). The Rams have finished in the top-three in five out of their seven
tournaments so far this year.
"The
second half of our lineup needs to improve if we are going to reach the goals
that our team has set for this year," Millikan said. "If we can do that,
we have a good shot at competing at the national level."
The
Texas Wesleyan junior varsity finished with a final team score of 603 and in ninth
place overall in the tournament.
The junior
varsity squad was well represented by freshman Justin Smith (73-71=144) and junior
Euan McIntosh (70-74=144) who both finished the tournament even par and tied for
seventh. Freshman Will Woodring (76-76=152) finished tied for 29th, while senior
Mark Gonzalez (83-81=164) and freshman TW Aaron (84-80-164) both finished tied
for 70th.
"Because we hosted the tournament,
all of guys were able to compete," Millikan said. "Euan and Justin (Smith)
played well and are making strong bids to earn a spot in the our top five. The
depth that we have will cause others to work harder to keep their positions."
Competing
individually for Texas Wesleyan were sophomore Chris Pena (70-76=146) who tied
for 13th, senior Chad George (78-76=154) who finished tied for 40th and freshman
Andrew Marshall (82-85=167) who tied for 75th.
"All
in all, this was a solid performance," Millikan said. "Oklahoma City's
top four players just outplayed us this week."
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action March 29-30, when they compete in the River Oaks
Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event will take place in Oklahoma City, Okla.
