WICHITA, Kan. - The Texas
Wesleyan golf team finished in first place, Tuesday at the Jet Classic,
firing a final round 292 to claim its second victory of the 2003-04
season.
Texas Wesleyan (287-292=579) finished 22
strokes ahead of second-place finisher, Tabor College (301-300=601).
Its 579-stroke total was only three strokes over par.
This was the second title for the Rams
this season. They also finished first at the Oklahoma Christian
Invitational in the fall season.
Down three strokes after day one, sophomore
Reino Deetlefs fired a 68 to take home the championship with a total
score of 139 (5-under par). Deetlefs tallied four birdies and went
bogey-free for the final round, on his way to being the first Ram
to win an individual title this season. Tabor College's Tommie Harrel
(68-73=141) finished second, just two strokes back of Deetlefs.
"This was Reino's first collegiate
victory," head coach Kevin Millikan said. "He knew that
he needed a good round and he went out and did just that. It was
probably one of the best rounds I have seen him play."
Also competing for Texas Wesleyan were
freshman Dan Hahn (72-74=146), who finished tied for third, junior
Justin Ward (73-74=147), who finished tied for fifth, freshman Scott
Sikes (71-78=149), who finished tied for seventh, and senior Ryan
Craig (74-76=150), who finished tied for ninth. This was the first
time this season that all five Ram golfers finished in the top 10.
"This is a great win for us,"
Millikan said. "We beat some really good teams. Our team played
like they were in a different league than our competitors."
