Rams gain first victory in doubleheader split with UT-Dallas
February 21, 2004

DALLAS, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan baseball team split a doubleheader with UT-Dallas, Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

UT-Dallas (3-1) took the opening game of the doubleheader, in a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Rams. Texas Wesleyan (1-8) used a five-run third inning to defeat the Comets, 8-4, in the second game.

In game one, the Rams took a 2-0 lead, on the strength of a RBI-single by junior Nathan Murrell and a sacrifice fly by freshman Jason Diaz.

The Comets came back and scored four runs off of Ram starter Shea Harrison in the fifth and six innings. Harrison (0-2) finished the evening allowing the four runs off of six hits, while striking out three batters in 5.1 innings of work.

In game two, the Rams scored five runs off of five hits in the third inning to take an early lead.

Freshman Drew Jeffcoat started for the Rams and did well. The Arlington, Texas native, allowed only one run on one hit, while striking out five Comet batters in four innings of work. Jeffcoat (1-0) also went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game.

UT-Dallas fought back with one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning, but Texas Wesleyan countered, scoring one run in the sixth inning and two insurance runs in the seventh.

Senior Brad Shiller pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two batters. He picked up the first save for the Rams this season and the first of his career.

Junior Mark Smajstrla led the way for Texas Wesleyan, going 2-for-4 with a triple and one run scored. Sophomore Matt Putman also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Sunday, when they travel to take on nationally ranked Oklahoma City University. The Stars finished last season as national runner-up. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
