| WESTWEGO,
La.- The Texas Wesleyan baseball team dropped two games Sunday at the Global
Bullion Trading Group Tournament. The Rams fell to Thomas University, 6-1, in
Sunday's opening game and were defeated by Mississippi College, 10-3, Sunday afternoon.
In
the opening game, Texas Wesleyan (0-5) banged out seven hits but left nine runners
on base as they dropped their fourth consecutive game.
Thomas
(5-4) opened the scoring in the second inning when third baseman David Gomillion
hit a three-run homer off of Texas Wesleyan starting pitcher Shea Harrison to
give the Knighthawks a 3-0 lead.
Harrison
(0-1) finished the game allowing four runs off of six hits, while walking two
and striking out three batters in four innings of work. The Arlington, Texas native,
picked up the loss for the Rams.
The Rams
fought back with a run of their own as senior Eric Vaughn drew a one-out walk,
advanced to third on a single by junior Anthony Bolivar and scoring on a double-steal
to cut the lead to 3-1, after two innings.
The
Knighthawks scored another run in the third inning when centerfielder Bobby Rodriguez
led off with a triple and scored on a double by first baseman Josue Gonzalez to
push the lead back to three at 4-1.
Sophomore
Ryan Cowgell took over for Harrison in the fifth inning and worked the final two
innings, allowing two runs on one hit.
"Our
offense stalled again on us," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "We are
getting base runners, we just aren't capitalizing on that."
Junior
Mark Smajstrla led the Ram offense going 3-for-3 with a stolen base.
In
the afternoon game, Texas Wesleyan's pitching escaped them as Mississippi College
scored 10 times against the Ram staff.
Texas
Wesleyan starting pitcher Eric Casias lasted only one inning, as the Choctaws
scored five runs in the first.
The Rams were
not able to recover from that first inning as they only managed three runs the
rest of the way. Freshman Jason Diaz led the way for the Rams, going 2-for-2 with
two walks. Senior Derek Armstrong knocked in two runs.
"We
got off to a bad start against Mississippi College and anytime you get behind
early it is tough to dig yourself out of that hole," Jeffcoat said. "We
still have a lot to work on to get to where we need to be."
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to take on East Central
Oklahoma for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
