Ram soccer places 10 on RRAC All-Conference team
November 12, 2003

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Texas Wesleyan men's soccer team placed two players on the first team and three players on the second team, which includes freshman Christian Villasenor, who was selected as co-newcomer of the year by the Red River Athletic Conference Wednesday. On the women's side, the Lady Rams also placed two women on the first team and three on the second team, including sophomore Jessica Carrion, who was selected as co-most valuable player.

For the men, Villasenor was also selected to the first-team. The Fort Worth native, scored a school record 25 goals and had two assists for the season.

"Christian provided a real spark for our offense this season," head coach Steve Jones said. "His ability will increase as each year passes. He should score many goals for this program in the future. To my knowledge, he is the first player in conference history to score at least one goal in every conference match."

Also making the first team was sophomore Ricky Gallardo. The El Paso native, finished the season three goals and nine assists.

Sophomores Eddie Hernandez and Rene Mercado, along with freshman Steven Deering, were named to the second team. Hernandez, a sophomore from El Paso, help lead the Ram defense that allowed only 1.6 goals per game. Mercado, a forward from Dallas, was second on the team in goals with 11 and tied Gallardo for the team lead in assists with nine. Deering, a goalkeeper from Highland Village, Texas, tallying 75 saves on the season.

On the women's side, Carrion was also selected to the first team. The Fort Worth native led the conference in goals scored with 29. That was also good enough to break her own record of 25 goals, which she set last season.

"Jessica led the conference in scoring for the second consecutive season," Jones said. "She didn't catch anyone by surprise this season and we played a lot tougher schedule, but she performed even better than last season. She has become more dangerous offensively and we anticipate that to improve next season. She has the potential to amongst the top career scoring leaders in the nation."

Junior Jessica Elder also was named to the first-team. The Arlington, Texas native, tallied nine goals and a conference-leading 17 assists.

Junior Cristal Pena, along with sophomores Katrina Fishback and Heather Fowler. Pena, an Arlington, Texas native, was second on the team in assists with 11 and also tallied five goals. Fishback, a goalkeeper from Burleson, Texas, finished the season with 118 saves. Fowler, a Leander, Texas, native, helped lead a Lady Ram defense that produced four shutouts.
