FORT WORTH, Texas - Defender Mark
Vega's free-kick found the back of the net and proved to be the
game-winning goal as Northwood defeated Texas Wesleyan, 3-1, in
the Red River Conference semifinals, Wednesday afternoon at Martin
Field.
Northwood (9-10-1) struck first in the
second half in the 48th minute when Luis Barragan scored on an assist
from Juan Martinez to put the Knights up, 1-0.
Texas Wesleyan (12-6-1) fought back with
a goal of their own when freshman Christian Villasenor picked up
a loose ball and chipped it over a Knight defender to knot the score,
1-1, in the 55th minute.
The Knights retook the lead in the 73rd
minute on the free-kick by Vega and put the game out of reach in
the 89th minute on a penalty kick by Martinez.
"We did a good job of never giving
up," head coach Steve Jones said. "When we tied the game
up at 1-1, the momentum was there for us. Their second goal was
a bit unlucky on our part, and it took some of the wind out of our
sails."
Texas Wesleyan finishes the season in second
place in regular-season play and tied for third place in the RRAC
tournament.
