FORT WORTH, Texas - Freshman forward
Christian Villasenor scored three goals and assisted on another
to lead the Texas Wesleyan men's soccer team past the University
of Science and Arts of Oklahoma 5-2, at Martin Field on Saturday
afternoon.
"The team's play was surprising,"
Texas Wesleyan head coach Steve Jones said. "USAO is a great
team that finished in the top of the Sooner Conference last season.
Our guys have been working hard and feeding off of one another's
hardwork. This was a great win for us."
Texas Wesleyan (1-0) got on the board
early as sophomore Rene Mercado scored in the ninth minute on a
penalty kick. That was all of the scoring in the first half as both
teams missed numerous opportunities.
The Rams broke the game open in the
second half when Villasenor scored his first goal and Mercado followed
with his second of the game in the 68th minute and 70th minute respectively.
USAO (0-1) fought back with a goal
of their own when forward Nene Coulibally put one past freshman
goalkeeper Steven Deering to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Villasenor then put the match out
of reach with two more goals down the stretch.
"Christian really stepped up
for us," Jones said. "He is a small kid but he played
big for us today. We are expected great things from all of our young
players."
Coulibally scored his second goal
of the game in the waning minutes for the final margin.
The Rams will be back in action Aug.
29, when they travel to Marshall, Texas to take on East Texas Baptist
