FORT WORTH, Texas - Needing a win to stay alive
in the double-elimination tournament, the Rams squared off against
top-seed Northwood University on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Shea
Harrison pitched five strong innings for Wesleyan, but ran into
trouble in the sixth, and the Rams fell 6-3.
Quinn Goldman led off the game with a souble for
Northwood, and would come around to score as the Rams made three
errors in the inning. Only a nicely-turned double play by Aaron
Ellis and Eric Vaughn up the middle kept the Knights from putting
the game away early.
Wesleyan immediately rallied to tie the score in
the bottom of the first. Billy Eaton led off with an infield single,
then moved to second as the third-baseman's throw sailed into the
bleachers. Eaton took third on Ellis' ground out, and scored on
a balk by Knight's starter Jeff Taborsky.
After a scoreless second, third, and fourth inning,
the Rams took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Casias belted
a single through the left side, then moved to second on Vaughn's
single. After a strikeout, Eaton was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Ellis drew an RBI base on balls, and Andy Hughes followed
with a sacrifice fly to right to put Wesleyan up 3-1, but it was
short-lived.
After an infield pop up to lead of the top of the
sixth for Northwood, Joe Beck doubled and Carlos Narvaez homered
to tie the score. Cleanup hitter Jason Kittle flew out to centerfield,
but a two-out rally put the Knights in fron for good. Shaun Ashman
and Jason Ford each singled, and Clark Baggett was hit by a pitch
to load the bases. Anthony Lopez' single to right scored two runs,
giving Northwood a 5-3 lead. They added the final run in the top
of the ninth on a pair of doubles by Chase Adams and Beck.
Harrison pitched six complete innings for the Rams,
allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits. He struck out 3 and didn't
walk a batter. Bryant Wilson pitched 2.1 innings, giving up 0 runs
on 1 hit. He struck out 2 and walked 1. Seth Manning came on in
relief of Bryant with 1 out and nobody on in the ninth, and gave
up 1 run on 2 hits.
Offensively, the Rams managed seven hits, all singles,
on the night. Eaton and Casias led the team with two apiece. Vaughn,
Matt Putman and Derek Armstrong had the others.
The Rams finish the tournament with a season record
of 37-21-1, but still have one game left to play. The Rams travel
to Arlington on Tuesday evening to take on the UTA Mavericks at
Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
Clay Gould Ballpark is located on the corner of
Fielder and Park Row, approximately one mile southwest of the UTA
main campus. From I-30, exit Fielder Road and turn south. Turn left
on Mitchell, then after you pass the elementary school, make an
immediate right into the Maverick Staduium parking lot.
