FORT WORTH, Texas - Carlos Medina took the
mound for Wesleyan in the first game of Sundays doubleheader
and absolutely shut down visiting Austin College. Perfect through
three innings, the only blemish on Medinas day was a
fourth-inning error in the Wesleyan outfield, turning what would
have been a perfect game into the first no-hitter of the season
for the Rams. He struck out eight and walked none.
Also of note on the day, infielder Jeremy Craft
returned from nearly a month off due to injury to hammer the first
pitch he saw over the fence in left-center. His 3-3 effort
provided more than enough offense for Medina as Wesleyan won
easily, 6-0.
Chris Bayuk started and won for the Rams in the
second game, giving up one run on two hits in four innings of
work. Cole Henry paced the offense, going 3-4 with a walk and two
RBI, and Craft added a two-run single as the Rams exploded for 13
hits in a 12-2 win.
Game 1: Wesleyan got on the board early
with a pair of runs in the first inning. Anthony Bolivar laced a
single to right with one out, and was still at first an out later
for Crafts homer.
The Rams struck for another in the second when
Nathan Murrell doubled, stole third, and scored on Eric Vaughns
infield hit deep in the hole at shortstop.
In the third, Wesleyan added another pair of
runs on four consecutive two-out singles. Craft started the rally,
and was followed by Travis Clifford, Matt Putman, and Derek
Armstrong, with the last two hits each driving in a run.
The Rams capped the scoring in the fifth. Craft
led off with a double off the wall in straight-away center, and
pinch-hitter Jeremy Dutton brought him home with a single to put
the Rams up 6-0.
Game 2: Murrell and Henry led off the
bottom of the first with back-to-back singles for Wesleyan, and
Putman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Rams a quick
1-0 lead in the second game.
Austin College tied it up in the top of the
third, though. James Erdle walked to lead off, and Steven Baker
followed with a bunt single. David Staton sacrificed the runners
over and Scott Orrell drove in a run with a ground out to second
base.
The Rams went back on top to stay in the bottom
half of the inning. Mike Greene led off with a line drive to left
that deflected off the fielders glove for an error, rolling
all the way to the wall and allowing Greene to take second base.
Murrell walked, and the pair immediately attempted a double-steal.
The throw to third got past the defender, and Green scored, just
beating the throw to the plate. Henry followed with a single,
moving Murrell to third. He scored one pitch later as the ball
bounced to the backstop. The next three batters were retired
quietly, but the Rams had built up a 3-1 lead.
Wesleyan put the game out of reach in the
fourth, scoring five times on three hits and three walks. With one
out, Kevin Kidd walked, and Cody Henderson and Greene singled to
load the bases. Carlos Medina drew a pinch-hit walk for an RBI,
and Henry followed with another before the Kangaroos changed
pitchers. After the switch, Clifford drove home a run with a
ground out to first and Craft lined a two-run single over second
base to put the Rams ahead 8-1.
After a pair of hit batsmen and a single gave
Austin College another run in the fifth, Wesleyan continued the
offense show. Eric Casias, who had replaced Kidd on the base path
an inning earlier, started the one-out rally with a single, and
moved to third on Hendersons second hit of the game. Greene
plated Casias with a sacrifice fly, and Murrell reached on an
error. Henry, Clifford, pinch-hitter Adrian Cardenas, and Dutton
all followed with singles, plating three more runs to give
Wesleyan a 12-2 lead, which held up as the final score.
The Rams have now won six of their past seven games,
improving to 23-18-1 on the season. They remain 9-9 in Red River
Conference play. The team returns to action on Tuesday, facing Howard
Payne for a single game at LaGrave Field.
