Rams Back Over .500 with Baseball Sweep of Austin College
March 25, 2003

The Texas Wesleyan baseball team won both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against Austin College in Sherman, improving their record to 14-13-1 for the season.

David Hinson allowed one earned run in six innings and Matt Putman homered as the Rams took the first game 10-4.

Chris Bayuk followed with a complete-game five-hitter to help Wesleyan cruise to a 6-1 win in game two.

Game 1: David Hinson allowed one earned run in six innings and Matt Putman hit a three-run homer in the fourth as the Rams cruised past the Kangaroos 10-4.

After the Rams left the bases loaded without scoring in the top of the first, Austin College took a 1-0 lead in their half of the inning. Leadoff hitter Steven Baker doubled, moved to third on a ground out, then scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Rams immediately came back to take the lead in the second, though. Travis Clifford and Nathan Murrell both walked with no outs to start the rally. Clifford then scored as Eric Vaughn’s grounder was misplayed by the Kangaroos’ pitcher. Billy Eaton’s sacrifice fly scored Murrell, and Anthony Bolivar’s single brought home Vaughn to give the Rams a 3-1 lead.

The Rams added to their lead in the fourth. Vaughn and Eaton led off with singles, and Bolivar reached on an error to load the bases. Andy Hughes knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice, and Cody Henderson did the same to put Wesleyan up 5-1. Derek Armstrong then singled to set up Putman’s third homer of the year, which gave the Rams an 8-1 lead.

Wesleyan struck again in the fifth. Consecutive one-out singles by Vaughn, Eaton, and pinch-hitter Carlos Medina loaded the bases for Hughes, who ripped a double to left. Vaughn and Eaton came home, putting Wesleyan in front 10-1.

The Kangaroos scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. Paul Hoffmeyer reached on an error, then moved to second on James Erdle’s single. A pair of sacrifices brought him around to score, cutting the lead to 10-2.

Austin College got their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh. With Cole Henry on the mound for Wesleyan, Erdle reached base and went to second on an error in the outfield. Josh Culp knocked him home with a single and moved up two bases on another Wesleyan outfield error. He scored two batters later when Scott Orrell lined a single to left.

Hinson picked up the win for Wesleyan, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. Henry pitched well in relief, allowing two runs (neither earned) on two hits in one inning. He struck out one and didn’t walk a batter. Aaron Abate takes the loss for Austin College, giving up eight runs (two earned) on eight hits in four innings.

Game 2: Wesleyan continued to get solid pitching and timely offense in the nightcap. Chris Bayuk threw a complete-game five-hitter and Anthony Bolivar and Cole Henry each added a pair of RBI as the Rams swept the doubleheader, winning 6-1 in game two.

Wesleyan jumped in front early as Nathan Murrell led off the game with a single, stole second, then scored on Andy Hughes’ single.

The Kangaroos came right back to tie the game when a two-out walk came around to score on Brandon Ginzer’s single, but the Rams put the game away in the top of the second inning. Travis Clifford led off with a walk, then moved to third on Jeremy Dutton’s double. Henry followed with a two-run single to center. Cody Henderson hit into a fielder’s choice, erasing Henry at second, but Eric Vaughn followed with a single, moving Henderson to third. After Vaughn stole second, Bolivar knocked in both runners with a single to right, giving the Rams a 5-1 lead.

The Rams put the finishing touches on the two-game sweep in the top of the seventh, scoring a single run on Derek Armstrong’s sacrifice fly.

Bayuk allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one in earning his first win of the year. Chaz Frankenberry took the loss for Austin College, giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
