University starting pitcher Andy Hughes was honored by the Red
River Conference today as the Pitcher of the Week for March 3-9.
Hughes, a senior from Crowley, Texas, tossed
five shutout innings in his only start of the week, a 7-0 victory
over the University of St. Francis (Ill.). Hughes never allowed a
runner past second base, striking out five and allowing just two
hits and one walk in the outing.
Hughes is 1-2 on the season, with both losses
coming at the hands of unearned runs. He leads the team in innings
pitched with 20, and also sports an impressive 2.70 ERA. He has
walked six and struck out 15 on the season.
Offensively he is a threat as well, currently
ranking second on the team in batting average (.375) and hits (9).
He is also third on the team with a .583 slugging percentage, and
is tied for third with four runs scored.
