FORT WORTH, Texas One month after a
lopsided loss to Texas Womans University in Denton, the Lady
Rams got a chance to redeem themselves, and made the most of it.
Playing in front of a rowdy home crowd of over 150, the Lady Rams
simply overpowered the Pioneers, sweeping three games (30-22,
30-27, 30-25) in less than 90 minutes. It was a marked turnaround
from the last meeting between these two teams, which the Pioneers
won in four games.
The service game was the
difference this time, said Wesleyan assistant coach Debi
Zuffinetti. When we played them up in Denton, we were out of
sync. Tonight, we were serving extremely well and did an even
better job of receiving their serves. We controlled the tempo of
each game.
Senior Leighann Krey led the Lady Rams with 14
kills and a .241 hitting percentage. She also led in digs (15) and
aces (2). Cortney Johansen tossed up 43 assists (14.3 per game)
and added 12 digs, and Tiffany Porterfield and Rachel Loftin led
the squad with 4 blocks apiece. Allyson Gaudi had 13 digs for the
Lady Rams as well.
For the visiting Pioneers, April Hollub led
with 8 kills and 3 blocks, Heather Smith had 9 digs, and Sheri
Hughes added 14 assists. Fort Worth native Melanie Pabalate led
Texas Womans University with 3 aces.
Wesleyan, who last week clinched the Red River
Conference Western Division crown, has one game remaining in the
regular season. They play Southwestern Assemblies of God at 7:00
PM next Tuesday in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The post-season
begins on November 15. Game times and locations will be made
available once the regular season ends. |
