FORT WORTH, Texas Wesleyan will tread on
new ground Tuesday afternoon when the Lady Ram soccer team becomes
its first participant in a Red River Conference post-season match.
Behind a 2-3-0 conference record, the Lady Rams qualified for the
fourth seed in the tournament, and will travel to Muskogee,
Oklahoma to face the top-seeded Lady Warriors of Bacone College
(4-0-1 in RRAC).
Theyre a good team, no
doubt about it, said Wesleyan coach Steve Jones. Theyve
already beaten us once this season [3-1 on October 15th in
Muskogee], and well be without Jessica Elder. But weve
played extremely well the past couple of weeks, so I like our
chances.
Indeed, Wesleyan has played well of late,
defeating the University of the Ozarks at home on Friday, 3-2,
then embarrassing Texas A&M-International on their own campus,
7-2 on Sunday. Recently named RRAC Player of the Week, Jessica
Carrion scored 7 of Wesleyans 10 goals and assisted on two
of the remaining three. The Lady Rams also expect the return of
junior defender Jolene Ratliff, the teams second-leading
scorer, who has been sidelined with a leg injury for two weeks.
Bacone, who has been idle since a season-ending
loss to John Brown College on October 31, did not finish the
season nearly as strong. Since October 20th, the Lady Warriors
have posted a record of 1-2-1, though the victory was against a
good College of the Southwest team. Bacone finished the season
with an overall record of 12-7-1.
Said Jones, I really think weve
got a good chance to pull this one out. Jessica [Elder]s
loss in the middle will change our game plan a little, but the
timing just seems right for us. Its going to be a great
game, thats for sure.
The Lady Rams will depart early Tuesday morning
for the four-hour drive to Muskogee. The game begins at 2:00 PM.
