November 3, 2002

FORT WORTH, Texas - In their first season of play in the Red River Conference, the Lady Ram volleyball team is setting high standards. Victories over UT-Permian Basin on Friday and College of the Southwest on Saturday brought their overall record to 17-10, and their conference record to 12-3, ensuring them the first seed in the Western Division of the Red River Conference playoffs.

On Friday, the Lady Rams were led by sophomore Nicky Davis and Senior Leighann Krey as they defeated UT-Permian Basin 30-23, 30-15, and 30-26. Davis had 13 kills, 9 blocks, and 2 aces, while Krey added 12 kills and 17 digs in the three game sweep. Cortney Johansen tossed up 38 assists for an average of 12.7 per game, Tiffany Porterfield had 17 total blocks, and Allyson Gaudi had 13 digs for the Lady Rams.

Saturday, Wesleyan traveled to Hobbs, New Mexico, and defeated the College of the Southwest, 3-1. Again leading the way for the Lady Rams was Leighann Krey, who posted 14 kills, 2 aces and 17 digs in the 25-30, 30-25, 31-29, 30-23 victory over the Lady Mustangs. Rachel Loftin also had 14 kills, with a hitting percentage of .636, and added 3 aces. Cortney Johansen averaged 13 assists over the four games, and Nicky Davis and Tiffany Porterfield each had 7 blocks. Susan Taylor had 20 digs and Allyson Gaudi added 12.

Going into the weekend, the Lady Rams had a one game lead over UT-Permian Basin and a two game lead over College of the Southwest for the division title. The two victories guarantee that even with a loss in the remaining conference match , Wesleyan will be ranked as the first seed in the Western Division of the Red River Conference playoffs, which begin on November 15th.

“I’m very happy with the way we’ve played this season,” said head coach Rick Johansen. “We’ve still got two more matches to take care of before the [Red River Conference] tournament, but that’s what we’ve been working towards. The team has put in a lot of effort, and they’ve earned that top spot.”

Wesleyan has two remaining games, both at home, before the start of the post season. They face Texas Women’s University, who defeated the Lady Rams in Denton on October 8th, on Tuesday, and then finish up the regular season at home against Southwestern Assemblies of God the following Tuesday. Both matches begin at 7:00 PM.
