CARROLLTON, Texas - Texas
Wesleyan sophomores Justin Smith and Will Woodring both qualified
for the 2005 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship Tuesday afternoon
at Coyote Ridge Golf Club.
Smith, a native of Runaway Bay, Texas,
shot an opening round 69 in Monday's opening round and finished
Tuesday with a 69 as well to finish the tournament, four-under par
and in second place. He was only one shot back of the champion Justin
Fraley of the University of Oklahoma who shot a five-under par,
137 for the tournament. Smith also shot an even-par 72 last week
and won in a three-way playoff for the final qualifying spot for
the Southern Amateur Championship. The qualifying tournament took
place in Flower Mound at Bridlewood Country Club.
Woodring, a native of Forney, Texas, shot
an opening round four-under par 67 and finished the tournament with
a one-over par 72 to tie for third place with Oklahoma State's Ryan
Posey.
"These are two of the most prestigious
events in amateur golf in the United States," head coach Kevin
Millikan said. "It says a lot about the hard work these guys
put in and their desire to excel."
Both men will be back in action July
11-16 at the Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio. Smith will also
be back in action at the Southern Amateur Championship, July 13-16
at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
