OLATHE,
Kan. - The Texas Wesleyan golf team shot a second-round 293 to move into fourth
place in the 2005 NAIA National Golf Championship Wednesday morning at the Prairie
Highlands Golf Course.
Texas Wesleyan (296-293-589) started off great,
shooting a combined 10-over par on the front nine. The Rams started on the back
nine today and shot only one-over par to begin the day. They are only eight shots
back of both defending national champion Oklahoma City (285-296-581) and Oklahoma
Christian (293-288-581). They are 25 shots behind first-round leader Johnson and
Wales (281-283-564) who is setting at 13-under par. Johnson and Wales had three
individuals shoot par or better, after finishing with four yesterday. "We
played the first nine real solid today," Texas Wesleyan head coach Kevin
Millikan said. "We just faded a little down the stretch. Overall, it was
a good round for us and we are still in the thick of the race for some of the
top spots." Sophomore Scott Sikes (73-69-142)
leads the Rams and is tied for fifth place, while junior Reino Deetlefs (72-73-145)
is tied for 12th place. Senior Justin Ward (72-75-147) turned in another solid
round and is tied for 18th place. Sophomore Justin Smith (79-76-155) is tied for
84th place and sophomore Dan Hahn (80-78-158) is tied for 106th place. "Scott
played well today and is in position for a run at one of the top spots,"
Millikan said. "The rest of the team gutted it out today. We have the opportunity
to move up in the standings in a positive direction." The
Rams will be back in action Thursday for the third round of the 2005 NAIA National
Golf Championship. The Rams will tee off beginning at 12:39 CT. You can follow
