Score CEDAR HILL, Texas - In
a game that featured nine pitchers and 25 hits, Texas Wesleyan was defeated by
Northwood, 16-15, Saturday afternoon in the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball
Tournament. The loss eliminated the Rams from the tournament and puts their post-season
in jeopardy.
Texas
Wesleyan (34-26) opened the scoring in the first inning when pitcher Jason Diaz
laced a one-out triple to left field. First baseman Travis Clifford followed with
a home run down the left field line to make the score, 2-0.
The
Rams pushed another run across in the second inning when rightfielder Jarod Baker
led off the inning with a walk. Second baseman Billie Hicks sacrificed him to
second base and third baseman Nathan Brandt singled him home to make the score,
3-0, in favor of Texas Wesleyan.
Northwood
(29-30) fought back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Texas
Wesleyan regained the lead in the top of the third inning as Baker came through
again with a two-RBI single to put the Rams ahead, 5-4.
The
Knights rebounded with three more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Chris
Holland provided the offense with a three-run home run to left field to put Northwood
back ahead, 7-5.
The Rams tied the game up
in the fifth inning when Hicks blasted a two-run home run over the centerfield
fence.
The Knights countered with five runs
in the bottom of the fifth inning, with the big hit coming from pinch hitter Zach
Wilfong who notched a grand slam.
Texas Wesleyan
answered with five runs of its own in the sixth inning to knot the score. Clifford
hit his second home run of the game. This one was a three-run blast to give the
big righthander 12 home runs on the season. Rightfielder Brandon Fraizer orchestrated
a nice squeeze bunt to score a run and Brandt knocked in a run on a RBI-groundout
to knot the score, 12-12.
Northwood answered
yet again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The last run
of the inning came on a squeeze bunt by third baseman Jay Ylda.
The
Rams seemed to always have the answer as they scored three runs in the eighth
inning. Hicks was the man again, lacing a three-run home run over the left field
fence to tie the score, 15-15.
In the bottom
of the eighth, Northwood scored what would be the winning run. Jason Cherry scored
on a fielding error by the Ram shortstop to make the score, 16-15.
The
Rams were set down in order in the ninth inning.
Mark
Smajstrla (1-2) was the hard-luck loser for the Rams, while Hector Frias (1-0)
picked up the victory for the Knights.
Texas
Wesleyan's season will be decided on Monday, when it find out whether or not it
is invited to play in the Region VI Tournament to be held in Houston, Texas on
May 11-14.
