HILL, Texas - Junior Travis Clifford scored on a passed ball in the bottom
of the 10th inning to give Texas Wesleyan a 3-2 victory over Huston-Tillotson
Friday afternoon in the Red River Athletic Conference Torunament at Knight's Field.
Texas
Wesleyan (34-25) opened the scoring in the second inning when centerfielder Mark
Smajstrla laced a one-out double to right field. He advanced to third on a groundout
by rightfielder Brandon Frazier and scored on a single by designated hitter Jarod
Baker to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Both
Texas Wesleyan's Shea Harrison and Huston-Tillotson's Larry Lumbresa held hitters
in check, not allowing a run until the eighth inning.
Huston-Tillotson
(24-18) took the lead in the top of the eighth inning when second baseman Gilberto
Gonzalez ripped a two-out double to right field to score both centerfielder Travis
O'Donnell and catcher Sammy Perez to give Huston-Tillotson a 2-1 lead.
Texas
Wesleyan fought back to score one run in the ninth inning to tie the score. Frazier
reached to lead off the inning on an error by Gonzalez. After Baker sacrificed
him to second base, Frazier advanced to third base on a ground out by third baseman
Jason Vaughn. Senior second baseman Anthony Bolivar delivered a clutch single
u the middle with two outs to score Frazier and send the game into extra innings.
In
the bottom of the 10th inning, first baseman Travis Clifford reached on a one-out
walk. Catcher Josh Vander Hey followed with a walk as well. Smajstrla also walked
to load the bases. Tillotson relief pitcher Clay Jessee committed a wild pitch
that scored Clifford for the winning run.
Harrison
took a no-decision, but pitched brilliantly, allowing two runs on five hits, while
walking two and striking out five batters in eight innings of work. Sophomore
Michael Talley (2-0) registered the win, pitching a scoreless ninth and 10th innings,
while allowing only two hits and striking out one batter.
Larry
Lumbresas (6-4) suffered the loss for Huston-Tillotson, allowing three runs on
11 hits, while walking three batters in 9.1 innings of work.
Texas
Wesleyan will be back in action Saturday when they face host Northwood University
in an elimination game. The game is a rematch of their first-round game in which
the Knights won, 11-1. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m. at Knight's Field in
Cedar Hill, Texas.
