Texas - Texas Wesleyan pitching surrendered 15 hits, as they fell to Northwood
University, 11-1, Thursday afternoon in the opening day of the Red River Athletic
Conference Tournament. The Rams are seeded second in the tournament and the host
Knights are seeded fifth.
 Texas
Wesleyan (33-24) opened the bottom of the first inning with rightfielder Jason
Diaz walking and leftfielder Zach Archer lacing a double to left field. Northwood
starting pitcher Shawn Arthur then proceeded to strike out three Ram batters in
a row to strand runners at second and third and end the threat.
Northwood
(28-29) struck early, pushing across six runs in the top of the third inning.
The Knights registered six hits during the inning off of Ram ace Jason Hopson.
The
Knights pushed across single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings off of
Ram reliever Hayden Lackey.
Wesleyan finally
pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out and the bases
loaded, catcher Josh Vander Hey ripped a line drive off of Arthur's foot. The
sophomore was able to recover and get the out at first base, but not before Bolivar
scored to cut the lead to 8-1.
The Knights
scored three more runs in the seventh inning off of junior reliever Brandon Wilson.
The Rams failed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh and the
game was called by run rule after seven innings.
Arthur
(6-3) picked up the victory allowing one run off of six hits, while walking three
and striking out six batters in six innings of work.
Hopson
(6-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits, while walking two and
striking out one batter in three innings of work.
Archer
led the Rams going 3-for-3 with a double, while designated hitter Jarod Baker
finished 2-for-4 on the day.
Texas Wesleyan
registered eight hits on the day, but couldn't capitalize, leaving 11 runners
on base for the game.
Texas Wesleyan will
be back in action Friday when they face Huston-Tillotson in an elimination game
of the Red River Athletic Tournament. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at Knight's
Field in Cedar Hill, Texas.
