FORT WORTH, Texas –
Houston Baptist (41-5, 14-0 in RRAC) showed why they’re ranked
#2 in the country as they swept the Texas Wesleyan Rams in a three
game series. The Huskies took game one 16-3 in five innings, followed
up with a 13-4 victory, and closed out the series with a 9-5 win
Saturday afternoon.
After pitchers Jason Hopson and Shea
Harrison threw earlier in the week against #21 LSU-Shreveport, Head
Coach Mike Jeffcoat started Senior David Hinson and Freshmen Caleb
Thomas and Chase Martin.
The Rams (33-23, 13-2 in RRAC) took
an early lead in game one when Sophomore Jason Diaz stole home in
the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies answered with an 11
run second inning, and chased Hinson out of the game after only
three innings. Diaz finished the series five for eight with three
runs scored and three stolen bases.
Josh Vander Hey finished the series
four for nine at the plate with two doubles and a run batted in.
He also made him season debut on the mound pitching the final inning
of game one.
Thomas started the second game, and
went four and two thirds innings allowing 10 runs on 17 hits. The
highlight of his rough outing came in the top of the third, when
after retiring the side in order; he was carried off the field on
the shoulders of his teammates.
In Saturday’s series finale,
the Rams kept the game close; even taking a 5-4 lead in the fourth
inning before the Huskies rallied with a five run seventh to seal
their victory. Wesleyan hitters recorded 11 hits while HBU batters
could muster only nine against the pitching team of Martin, Hayden
Lackey, Michael Talley, and Brandon Wilson.
The Rams finish the regular season
Sunday at Dallas Baptist in a game rescheduled from April 23rd.
Texas Wesleyan begins the Red River Athletic Conference tournament
