FORT WORTH, Texas – Houston Baptist (41-5, 14-0 in RRAC) showed why they’re ranked #2 in the country as they swept the Texas Wesleyan Rams in a three game series. The Huskies took game one 16-3 in five innings, followed up with a 13-4 victory, and closed out the series with a 9-5 win Saturday afternoon.Caleb Thomas

After pitchers Jason Hopson and Shea Harrison threw earlier in the week against #21 LSU-Shreveport, Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat started Senior David Hinson and Freshmen Caleb Thomas and Chase Martin.

The Rams (33-23, 13-2 in RRAC) took an early lead in game one when Sophomore Jason Diaz stole home in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies answered with an 11 run second inning, and chased Hinson out of the game after only three innings. Diaz finished the series five for eight with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Josh Vander Hey finished the series four for nine at the plate with two doubles and a run batted in. He also made him season debut on the mound pitching the final inning of game one.

Thomas started the second game, and went four and two thirds innings allowing 10 runs on 17 hits. The highlight of his rough outing came in the top of the third, when after retiring the side in order; he was carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates.

In Saturday’s series finale, the Rams kept the game close; even taking a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning before the Huskies rallied with a five run seventh to seal their victory. Wesleyan hitters recorded 11 hits while HBU batters could muster only nine against the pitching team of Martin, Hayden Lackey, Michael Talley, and Brandon Wilson.

The Rams finish the regular season Sunday at Dallas Baptist in a game rescheduled from April 23rd. Texas Wesleyan begins the Red River Athletic Conference tournament May 4th. Check RamSports.net for game time and opponent information.
