FORT WORTH, Texas –
Junior Shea Harrison continued to frustrate opposing hitters, as
he limited Pilot hitters to two runs on four hits as he led the
Rams to a 3-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. LSU-Shreveport
(37-16) used six Wesleyan (33-20) errors in the second game to their
advantage as they squeaked out a 3-2 win to split the series.
Harrison tied his season high with
nine strikeouts as he went the distance for the fourth time this
season and the seventh complete game of his career. The hard throwing
lefty improved to 9-2 on the year and lowered his earned run average
to 4.06.
First baseman Travis Clifford drove
in two runs on two hits. His 53 runs batted in lead the conference.
Junior Zach Archer scored the winning run in the third inning on
a single by Clifford.
In the second contest, the Rams recorded
as many defensive errors as they did base hits. Middle infielders
Billie Hicks and Anthony Bolivar each committed two errors as all
three of the Pilots runs were unearned.
Starter Jason Hopson almost bailed
his defense out, pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing
seven hits while striking out two and walking none. Sophomore Michael
Talley pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit
and striking out one.
Centerfielder Mark Smajstrla finished
the doubleheader two for five, and extended his hit streak to a
season high eleven games.
The Rams have clinched second place
in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament scheduled for May
4-7th at Northwood University.
Texas Wesleyan finishes the regular
season against the #2 Huskies of Houston-Baptist to Fort Worth Friday
and Saturday. Friday’s doubleheader is at Sycamore Park, and
gets started at 2 p.m. First pitch Saturday is at 11:30 a.m.
