ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Texas
Wesleyan baseball team dropped both games of doubleheader to Henderson
State Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Reddies took
game one, 12-11, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
inning. The Rams also lost a shortened game two, 13-4. The game was
called in the sixth inning due to darkness. Texas Wesleyan has now
dropped four straight games in a row.
In game one, Texas Wesleyan (25-16) opened
the game on a tear, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings
to take a 10-5 lead. First baseman Travis Clifford continued to impress
at the plate, registering two solo home runs and a RBI-single. The
junior has hit safely in 24 of his last 27 games, tallying a .495
average during the streak, to go along with a team-high 40 RBI and
30 runs scored.
Henderson State (25-16) fought back to take
the lead in the sixth inning by plating six runs off of Ram reliever
Michael Talley.
Clifford tied the game at 11-11 in the top
of the seventh with his second home run of the game, but the Reddies
scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of
Ram reliever David Hinson.
In game two, Henderson State jumped out to
an early 9-3 lead after three innings. The Rams could not solve Reddie
starting pitcher Keller Reeves who picked up the victory holding Texas
Wesleyan to only one run over the final four innings.
Even though the Ram pitching has been struggling
of late, Texas Wesleyan's bats have not cooled off as they have produced
a .356 team batting average, which is tops in the conference. They
have had double-digit hits in 14 of the last 18 games. They have also
had at least one home run in those 18 games as well.
Leading the Rams at the plate today was Clifford
who finished 4-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBI. Second baseman
Anthony Bolivar also had a good day, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored
and two RBI.
The Rams will be back in action this weekend
when they host conference-rival UT-Permian Basin in a key three-game
series. First pitch for Friday's single game is 3 p.m. at LaGrave
Field. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. Texas Wesleyan currently
sits in first place by one game over Northwood in the North Division
of the Red River Athletic Conference standings. The Rams also have
a three-game series with Paul Quinn.
