OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Texas
Wesleyan University Wesleyan golf team currently sits in second
place at the 2005 NAIA Region VI Tournament. The 72-hole tournament
is being held at the Quail Creek Golf and Country Club.
Texas Wesleyan (294-303-597) is 12 shots
behind the leader and host Oklahoma City University who fired a
290-295-585 to take the lead after the first day. The Rams are three
shots ahead of #1 Oklahoma Christian (304-296-600).
"We played well in the morning round
but kind of faltered in the afternoon round," head coach Kevin
Millikan said. "It is the same issue we have dealt with all
season. We have not had a good fourth score and you can't expect
to win a tournament like that."
Senior Justin Ward (73-75-148) and junior
Reino Deetlefs (74-74-148) lead the way for the Rams as they are
both tied for eighth place. Sophomore Scott Sikes (70-79-149) is
in 10th place, while sophomore Dan Hahn (77-75-152) is tied for
15th and junior Blake Sullivan (77-80-157) is tied for 28th.
"We just haven't been able to save
par in either round," Millikan said. "We have to come
out tomorrow and take care of our own business and not worry about
what the other teams are doing."
Texas Wesleyan does, however, lead the
race for the Red River Athletic Conference Championship, which is
running concurrently with the regional tournament. College of the
Southwest (N.M.) is 22 shots behind the Rams after shooting a 307-312-619
on the first day.
The Rams will be back in action Tuesday
as they play the final 18 holes. The 54th annual NAIA National Tournament
will take place May 24-27, at the Prairie Highlands Golf Course
in Olathe, Kan.
